Ten Rules for Saving Money on Hawaii Rental Car

1. Compare rates on the internet. This could vary widely depending on supply and demand so don't assume that one rental car company is more expensive than another.

2. Check for online coupons or coupon codes before reserving your car. Simply go to Google and type in words like "car rental coupon" or "car rental coupon code" and choose the best one.

3. Check for weekly rates whenever possible. They are usually much less money than a daily rate.

4. If you are traveling to several islands, ask about multi-island bookings or island hopper rates from one rental car company.

5. Reserve the right size car. Make sure that the car will hold all the passengers as well as all of their luggage. Too many people pick up their cars, attempt to pile in the people and the luggage and discover that the car is too small for them. The rental car company will probably charge much more for the car upgrade when you are at your destination than they would when you reserve your car.

6. Check to see if your credit card company has insurance coverage for rental cars. Know exactly what kind of coverage they offer so you can make the decision in advance if you will need the costly insurance from the car rental company. Then make sure that you pay for your rental car with that credit card so that you will be covered.

7. ALWAYS PRINT OUT A COPY OF YOUR RESERVATION AND BRING IT WITH YOU. Make sure that your printout clearly includes the dates of the reservation, the type of car, and the price. This will certainly come in handy if the rental car company says that they don't have your reservation or they have a different rate listed for you.

8. Resist the temptation to upgrade your car at the rental car counter. Customers are often told that they can upgrade their car for just a few dollars more and they will be so much more comfortable. The time to think about what kind of car you want is when you make your reservation, not when you are making a split second decision with lots of people standing behind you in line.

9. Refuse the option of "saving money on gas" by returning with an empty tank of gas. If is quite rare to predict exactly how much gas you will use up before you return your car so the odds are that you will not be able to get it down to empty.

10. Always make sure that you return your car with a full tank of gas. Fill up just before you get to the airport to avoid any gas charges from the rental car company.

jWe just stayed there with our 3 kids. It was very clean and our room was in good condition. It was nice to have 2 rooms plus a kitchen with kids. The pool and tennis court were really nice. They rent rackets if you don't bring your own. All the staff were very nice. They have complementay coffee in the lobby each day. Nice if you are to lazy to make your own in your room. The only draw back would be that it is at the end of waikiki beach by the zoo so can be a bit of a walk to the center of waikiki. The bus stops are very close if you want to take the city bus. We will be back.

Sometimes you have to spend money to save money. This seems to be true for getting around Maui. You might say that you plan to just hang out at the hotel so you don't need a rental car but it can actually save you money to rent a car in Maui. Here is why. It looks like a taxi ride from the airport can be quite costly. The approximate costs to various locations are:

Kaanapali - approximately $87 one way
Kapalua - approximately $105 one way
Kihei - approximately $40 one way
Lahaina - approximately $65 one way
Maalea - approximately $33 one way
Makena - approximately $65 one way
Wailea - approximately $57 one way

That means that if you are staying in Kaanapali, just getting to and from the hotel by taxi would cost around $174. Adding the cost and inconvenience of getting around Maui to see the beautiful sights without a car makes the answer even more clear. A rental car will actually save you money in the long run if you look carefully for the best rental car deal.

You can often get good deals for rental cars by bidding for one on Priceline. Keep in mind that if your bid is accepted, you can't cancel so that takes away your flexibility. But sometimes the difference in price more than offsets possible disadvantage. If you want to find out what kinds of bids that other people have been winning, go to Bidding For Travel. So the verdict is in. Rent a car and save money on transportation while having the added bonus of seeing more of this amazing island. So drive safely and enjoy the view. And don't forget to close your trunk when you leave your car!

You can sometimes find great price on hotel rooms in Hawaii through Priceline if you do your research before you bid. When you bid on Priceline, you don't find out what hotel you get until after your bid is accepted so find out as much information as possible before you bid by researching your desired location on Bidding For Travel. With just a little investment of time, you will be able to find out what hotels people have bidded successfully on, for what dates, and at what price. This will give you an idea of what hotels you might get if your bid is successful. When on Bidding For Travel, simply scroll down to one of the Hawaii sections and click on it. You will find information that people sent in that can be very helpful. For example, when I clicked on Hawaii-Kauai/Big Island/Molokai on 01/09/08, I found the following information.

Look for patterns. For example, you can see that a number of people have written about getting the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort for $130. From my experience, your chances for getting a specific hotel is increased when you read that many people have gotten that hotel in a short period of time. This also tells you that you have a good chance of getting a bid of $130 accepted if you bid for a resort on Big Island. Having this kind of information is a great way to keep from overbidding. Once again, that does not mean that you will get the same hotel that others have gotten, so if you have your heart set on a specific hotel, this kind of bargain hunting is not for you. But if you are willing to take a risk and possibly find a great hotel for a great price, I would highly recommend it.

Bargain Hunter Hotline checks Bidding for Travel regularly to look for patterns and have found very good deals. For example, several years ago, a bargain hunter noticed that quite a number of people were winning the Hyatt Hotel in Kaanapali for $65 a night!!! The Kukui Trail
This 5-mile (round trip) trail drops 2,000 feet into spectacular Waimea Canyon, and offers the shortest route to the canyon floor. There's a large swimming hole at the bottom. The trail begins off the Iliau Loop Trail.

The Kuilau Ridge Trail
This 4.2-mile (round trip) hike offers dramatic views of small waterfalls and a wealth of flora. The trailhead is about a mile beyond the University of Hawaii Agricultural Experimental Station on Route 580.

The Kalalau Trail
This is the original Hawaiian trail into Kalalau Valley, and offers dramatic views of Na Pali Coast and Kee Beach. It begins at Kee Beach where Highway 56 ends. Two miles inland is Hanakapiai Falls, which cascades 300 feet to a pool below. The trail travels on to Kalalau Valley, and many hikers camp overnight at Hanakapiai and before continuing on the next day. The entire trip is best made by experienced hikers.

Waimea in Hofgaard Park
Where Captain Cook first landed in the Islands in 1778. Waimea town also has a number of other historical buildings.

Waimea Canyon
Hike any of dozens of trails in Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". There is a river, dozens of waterfalls, and countless unique and gorgeos attractions within this canyon.

DIAMOND HEAD
You can hike 760-foot Diamond Head for a 360-degree view of Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. Enter off Monsarrat Avenue and park inside the crater. Make sure you are wearing good shoes and take your time getting to the top. Most people carry water and a camera. Call 587-0300.

U. S. S. ARIZONA MEMORIAL
Interpretive programs, including a documentary film about the attack on Pearl Harbor and the boat trip to the USS Arizona Memorial, begin at 7:45 a.m. The last program each day begins at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are issued on a first come, first served basis. Visitors should expect crowds. Daily visitation to the park is about 4,500 people. Admission is free. Call 422-0561. NUUANU PALI LOOKOUT
The lookout is on Oahu's windward side from the Nuuanu Pali Lookout at the 1, I 86-foot summit of the Pali Highway. If you drive you will have to take the Nuuanu Pali Lookout exit off highway 61.

HISTORIC BATTERY RANDOLPH
Battery Randolph is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1911, the massive, steel reinforced concrete structure housed two 14" diameter guns on "disappearing carriages" whose accuracy and range of 11 miles allowed them to outgun any Battleship then afloat. The Battery survived demolition attempts in 1968 and became the home of the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii in 1976. Its unique construction and architecture are featured through exhibits and adaptive restoration.

ALOHA TOWER
Ride the elevator to the 10th floor of the 185-foot Aloha Tower, the tallest structure on Oahu until 1959. View downtown Honolulu and the harbor. It will take you hours to stroll through the adjoining Aloha Tower Marketplace.

HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS
The Academy of Arts, established in 1927, houses a number of important works. Open 10 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday; and closed on holidays. Call 532-8701.

ENTERTAINMENT
Hilton Hawaiian Village: Fireworks and show by the beach pool every Friday night at sunset.

Punalu'u Bakery
America's southernmost bakery is Punalu'u Bakery in the village of Naalehu. Stop in and try samples of their famous sweet rolls in delicious flavors such as Taro and Guava.

Aloha Fridays
Every Friday on the islands is affectionately referred to as "Aloha Fridays". One Friday, visit the Keauhou Shopping Center and get free ukulele lessons, free lei making classes, and free hula shows.

Akatsuka Orchid Gardens
The Akatsuka Orchid Gardens has one of the largest orchid collections in Hawaii. They've placed a basket of flowers by the entrance. Help yourself to one and place it in your hair just like the Hawaiians.

The Road to Hana
Making the trip to Hana is one of the best things to do in Maui. Really, the best way to experience all that Hana has to offer is by staying in Hana for a few days. If this isn’t an option, the day trip is still wonderful. We recommend those that get car sick to not drive all the way to Hana. The Road to Hana is about the gorgeous views and waterfalls along the way. Drive till you feel 1/2 content, and turn around. Driving the entire road there and back will take over 5 hours without stopping.

Go to the Beach
This is a no-brainer. It’s free and one of the best activities to do. Choose one of Maui’s best beaches and make the journey.

Snorkeling
You can snorkel for free right off the beach.

Do a Nature Hike
Taking a hike through rainforests and to waterfalls is what Maui is all about. Hiking in Maui is really the best way to see the real beauty of the island. Taking a hike by yourself is great so long as you’re on a path and know where you’re going. Avoid tresspassing.

Sunrise from Haleakala Crater
Watching the sunrise from the Haleakala Crater is breath-taking. You’ll have to wake up really early to get to the top but it is worth is if it forecast to be a clear day. Check the weather forecast before starting out.

Whale Watching
By far one of the best Maui activities to do is whale watching. This is only possible during the winter months due to humpback migration patterns. You can sometimes see them right from shore. Take a pair of binoculars for better viewing.

Explore Upcountry
The paniolo side of Maui has some of the best views on the island. Makawao and Kula are fun areas to explore with beautiful homes and great shopping.

Peruse the Art Galleries
Each town offers its own art galleries, but some of the more popular areas are Lahaina, Wailea, Paia, and Makawao. You can find everything from ocean scenes to wild abstract art in the many art galleries on Maui.

Go Frisbee Golfing
Frisbee Golf is a fun outdoor activity that allows for the players to get some exercise while enjoying Maui’s weather and views. Bring your own frisbee and this activity will not cost anything.

Wine Tasting
The Tedeschi Winery upcountry is a fun spot to stop and sample some of Maui’s own wine. By no means is the wine award winning, but the novelty of the experience and the views while up there are worth the journey.

Visit the Iao Valley
One of the few places in the world as lush as Hana would be the Iao Valley. Bring a rain slick and be prepared to enter a world of towering cliffs and the Iao Needle. This area is also rich with Hawaii’s history.

Explore a Lava Field
Maui’s latest eruption a couple hundred years ago put the great volcano of Haleakala to rest. The lava fields from the last lava flow make up miles of jagged moon-like landscape on the southern tip of the island. Makena is largely covered in this flow, which is quite breath taking to visit.

Watch Kiteboarding and Windsurfing
Maui is the windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of the world. Warm winds blow almost everyday in a very predictable manner leaving shores with perfect conditions. With winter swells, the surf adds to the excitement. Just watching these brave athletes launch 60 feet in the air is worth the trip to Kite Beach on the North Shore.

Watch Giant Waves
In the winter, Maui is battered by enormous waves. Watching Hookipa or Jaws while safe on shore can be quite a rush. The surfers who challenge these waves are fascinating to watch.

Volunteer
Volunteering on vacation is becoming a widely practiced activity on the islands. Those that decide to make the trip to Kaho’olawe, to replant trees and shrubs, are looked upon by locals with great respect. This is also a wonderful way to build lasting relationships with visitors and residents alike.

Visit a Blow Hole
You can find many different blowholes on the island, and with large swells, these spouting explosions can perform quite a show. This is one of those free activities that only require a short hike and directions.

Visit a Black Sand Beach
Waianapanapa State Park, just before Hana Town, is the best black sand beach on the island. The contrast between the black sand and bright blue ocean makes for some dynamic photographs. There are also sea caves and lava tubes in the park. Ancient Hawaiian lore surrounds this area.

Watch Spinner Dolphins
La Perouse is a regular area for Spinner Dolphins to congregate in the morning. You can sometimes see them when you are snorkeling.

Join the Biggest Halloween Celebration in Hawaii
Lahaina, Maui is known for its Halloween party on Front Street. Every year over 25,000 people line the oceanfront street in full costumes to participate in a Mardi Gras environment. This party tops Halloween anywhere else.

Bird Watching
Maui is home to many species of beautiful Hawaiian birds. Visit Haleakala National Park to see Maui forest birds.

Swim Under a Waterfall
Find a waterfall to swim under and around. There are hundreds all over the island, but you may need to get up early to find one to have all for yourself.

Go Sightseeing
Maui has a rich history that can be found in many areas of the island. Visit some of the many churches began by the first missionaries on the island.

Visit Historic Lahaina Town and its Banyan Tree
The old whaling town of Lahaina is rich with history. Before it was a whaling harbor, it acted as the meeting place for Hawaiian kings to throw huge parties. One of Lahaina’s prominent features is the Banyan Tree that extends over an entire block.

Take a Photo Safari
Grab your cameras and set out in any direction. You’re bound to find brilliant landscapes to capture as well as unique plant and animal life.

Swim in a Natural Ocean Pool
There are many natural pools built into the rocks around the coastline. One of the best spots can be found on the upper west of Maui. The Olivine Pools are surrounded by a wild volcanic landscape that oddly resembles the moon.

Explore Tide Pools
The most life on Maui can be found in the tide pools. You’ll find fish, crabs, banana slugs, sea urchins and more when exploring the little arches and pools within the volcanic coasts of Maui. Be very careful not to harm the marine life that you walk around, and remember that it can be slippery.

Visit a Bamboo Forest
Many of the best hikes on Maui begin in bamboo forests. Bamboo grows extremely fast and tall which makes for stunning landscapes.

Watch the Sunrise in Hana
The sun rises on the East side of the island with dramatic colors. Hana is so peaceful in the morning and can offer a calming awakening that will start your day right.

Go Body Surfing
Not all beaches on the island are good for body surfing due to lava formations and dangerous waves. When you find the right sandy beach, the body surfing can be awesome.

Cliff Diving
From Black Rock in Ka’anapali to the rock cliffs at Venus Pools, Maui is notorious for really good cliff diving areas. Make sure to know where you’ll be landing before jumping. Be careful and know your own limits. Don't get carried away by seeing other people doing it. It is often just as much fun to watch (and a lot safer)

Visit a Red Sand Beach
Hana is home to a perfect isolated red sand beach. It’s also a nudist beach, so be prepared to see some bodies. This bright red beach is mind-blowing and wonderful for pictures.

Enjoy a Maui Sunset
Some of the best sunsets on the planet are found in Maui. The South and West shores offer the most spectacular views over the ocean. As the sun dips into the sea, you may see a green flash of light.

Things You Can Do for Free in Hawaii

Find free things that you can do on vacation in Hawaii.

Beaches are free in Hawaii.
Every hotel is required to offer free beach access so no beach is off limits. Don't be intimidated by the hotel lawn chairs and coordinated beach towels. Buy a beach mat at any ABC store for around $1.00, grab your own towel and pick the best beaches to enjoy. Each beach is unique so explore. YOu can find a different beach for every day of your vacation.

Park for free at the beach.
Every hotel is required to offer at least ten free parking spots. So look around before you drive into the expensive hotel parking lots. If you come early enough, you can usually take advantage of this free parking.

Go to the free shows.
You will find free shows that are performed by locals in Hawaii that are often the most authentic and charming. For example,if you are visiting Lahaina, you can often find free shows at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and Whalers Village. Keiki (children) Hula Shows Wednesday @ 2:30 pm & Friday @ 3:30 pm

Renew your vows.
Pick your favorite beach and renew your vows at sunset. You can get "Mauied" in Maui.

Snorkel
Snorkel right off the beach instead of paying for expensive snorkel trips.
There are some amazing places to snorkel right off the beach in Hawaii so skip the $100 snorkel trips, grab a snorkel and some fins and head for one of these great snorkel spots. Two of the top snorkel spots on Maui are Kapalua Bay and Black Rock.
Kapalua Bay is a beautiful beach with showers, change rooms and restrooms and is good for beginner to intermediate level.
Black Rock is a great snorkeling location for beginner to intermediate right in front of the Sheraton Hotel on Ka'anapali Beach.
If you are headed for Kauai, try Poipu Beach Park in the winter and Ke'e Beach in the summer. On the big island, amazing snorkeling can be found on Kealakekua Bay near the Captain Cook Monument. These are just a few suggestions. There are many other great places to snorkel right off the beach. Hint: You can pick up a snorkel guide map at most dive shops in Hawaii that includes detailed information about various snorkel locations on the island.

Dine for LE$$ in Hawaii

Food can be expensive in Hawaii but with a little planning, you can eat great for LE$$. Here are a few tips for saving money in restaurants and beyond.

1. Look online for printable coupons for restaurants. Check out valpak.com and
http://www.ecouponshawaii.com

You can also find coupons for activities, hotels, car rentals, etc. on these websites

2. Look for sunset specials at restaurants. You can often find great prices and the best view of a sunset by eating earlier in the evening at an ocean front restaurant. Check out the restaurants earlier in the day to find out what is offered, at what price and during what hours. For example, if you are taking a stroll on the paved walkway along Kaanapali Beach in Maui, you can look at the menus that are posted by various restaurants all along the walk. If they have a sunset special, it is usually listed along with the regular menu.

3. Stock up on tourist literature at the airport. There are usually racks and racks of information that is available very close to baggage claim. If you are traveling with someone else, save time by having one person wait for the luggage and the other person look at the literature that is offered. Many of the magazines and pamphlets will have coupons for restaurants. You can often find some of this literature at various places around town but the airport is usually the best place to find the most extensive assortment of literature all in one place. TIP: Look through them quickly to see if there are good coupons and take two of those just in case you fall in love with a restaurant and/or find a really good deal and want to go back to the same restaurant again.

4. Have a picnic at the beach. Go to a grocery store and pick up some local foods and head for your favorite spot on the beach. You will save money while dining someplace that you cannot dine when you are at home.

5. Go to Costco. If you are visiting Maui and are a member of Costco, you can get stop off there on the way to your hotel. There is a Costco very close to the airport. Get some terrific Hawaiian pineapples to eat on your lanai. You can also get some muffins to eat for breakfast along with the Kona coffee you may be lucky enough to have in your hotel room. It makes a great continental breakfast that is low cost and convenient. Costco also has Hawaiian macadamia nuts that you can eat as snacks and/or give as gifts to friends when you return from your vacation.

6. Get an entertainment book. It sometimes pays to get an entertainment book if you will be visiting several islands. It contains coupons for restaurants and fast food. It also has coupons for activities and sightseeing. If you time it right and your vacation corresponds with when the entertainment book is about to expire, you might catch one of their specials such as $10 for any entertainment book. You can even "pay it forward" at the end of your vacation by giving the rest of the entertainment book to someone at your hotel who is just starting a vacation.

Get Hotel Room Upgrades or Extras

Here are two suggestions for getting hotel room upgrades or extras. There are no guarantees but both ideas are worth a try.

1. Make sure that you sign up for preferred guest status at every hotel you will be staying at in Hawaii and notify the hotel that you have this status. You can sometimes get room upgrade or extras such as priorty check in. At least, you will earn points toward another stay. For example, you can sign up for the following:

Starwood Preferred Guest if you are staying at a Westin or Sheraton Hotel
Marriott Rewards if you are staying at a Marriott or Ritz-Carlton
Hyatt Gold Passport if you are staying at the Hyatt
Priority Club Rewards if you are staying at the Holiday Inn

2. Just ask. This may sound too simple but sometimes the hotel is nice enough to give you a room with a better view if they have low occupancy. It doesn't cost them anything if the room is available and gets them a lot of good will. Some people have gotten better rooms because they mentioned that it was a special anniversary, birthday, promotion or other special occasion. One couple mentioned that it was their 25th anniversary and the hotel was nice enough to give them an ocean view room and delivered a lovely tray of Hawaiian treats to their room on their anniversary at no cost. Another couple even got a room upgrade because their luggage did not arrive with them and the hotel wanted them to enjoy their stay in spite of their bad luck.
